Locked out of Facebook by the Advanced Protection setup

Meta requires Advanced Protection, the program that used to be called Facebook Protect, on some accounts, including people who manage Pages and business portfolios that advertise. If the setup deadline passes, the account can be locked until setup is done. Finish it from a device you have used with the account before, choose an authenticator app or a passkey, and save the recovery codes.

Finish the setup

  1. Use a phone or computer you have used with this account before.
  2. Open Settings, then Accounts Center, then Password and security.
  3. Open Advanced Protection and follow the prompts.
  4. Choose an authenticator app or a passkey rather than text messages.
  5. Save the recovery codes offline.
  6. Log out and back in if the lock does not clear.

If the setup keeps failing

Keep the business running

While your profile is locked you cannot manage ads, Pages or billing. A second admin on the business portfolio can. See add a backup admin, and for lost codes see locked out by two-factor authentication.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Does it apply everywhere?

Meta says enrollment is required in most countries and optional in Canada.

Can I turn it off?

Not on an account Meta requires it for.

Someone offers to remove the lock for a fee

Do not pay and do not share codes. These offers are a common way to take over accounts.
